A list of ingredients for art with friends
- Room. A garage with a couple of tables is best. A kitchen works, too.
- Crayons. For color…and as a reminder of first experiences with hand-to-paper.
- Paint. Because it teaches how to blend. And when you blend too much, it turns to mud. I don’t know, but it seems like a good lesson somehow.
- Charcoal. For good grey areas.
- Pencils. For definition.
- Erasers. To reveal what was hidden.
- Brushes. For Mixing. For Texture. For strategic daubing of noses.
- Photographs and magazines. For inspiration and advice.
- Canvases. You just can’t explore as much on paper.
- Big Paper. At some point you have to lay on the floor and draw on big paper. It’s just a good creative moment.
- Plates. They’re good for holding food. Or paint. Or both.
- Mod Podge. For sticking together.
- Found objects. For personal application.
- People. Anyone willing to put pencil or brush to canvas.
- Water.
- Music. It’s best with an ipod on shuffle, because every so often, a song will come up that will make everyone spontaneously break into laughter.
- Silence. For punctuation.
- Food. Especially cupcakes because they are good for painting, too.
- Fear. You can’t make art without it.
- Laughter. Some things are going to turn out funny. That’s just the way it is. You try to paint two hills and it ends up looking like a butt. You’ve got to laugh.
i really like how this is a list but with meaningful phrases that go past usual list mentality.

love love love it. makes me wish for a garage somewhere between here and bellingham. love that you added fear to the mix, because that is usually how I approach art.... and next comes laughter. very true. :-)
ReplyDeleteI can practically picture this place. An artist's heaven ... reminds me of my mom's dining room table now and again when I was growing up.
