Untitled [jana]

“Pay Attention” they command,
and the experience of generations
insists that I submit and discipline
and practice solitude and silence.

Like piano scales the minutes rattle by,
jarring empty space a song could fill.
This silent train wanders
loud as the whisper of my own heartbeat,
And I wander inside, looking for the quiet room with the window.

I don’t know what I’m looking for,
perhaps the focus of a child at play
A mindful state of the heart

  1. I'm not sure if this actually connects or not, but as I was reading this I got this picture of a little girl sitting inside a house looking out the window at all of the children in the neighborhood playing and she wasn't allowed to go outside and play with them, so she just sat and watched.

It really made me sad for this little girl...

I also really liked the images of the last two lines because from an external perspective, children playing rarely looks focused and the heart rarely comes appears mindful.

  2. It's a great picture of both desire for meditation and the struggle I actually have with it.

    I know it'll be good for me...buuuut.

  3. Beautiful imagery...sometimes the descriptions of the hardest things bring out the most lovely pictures in my mind. Thanks, Jana.

  5. This is awesome. Short and poignant, pensive.

I'm trying to figure out the line, "Like piano scales the minutes rattle by,/jarring empty space a song could fill." I love it.

  6. jarring empty space. funny how we expect solitude to feel so peaceful. but at times it doesn't.

    loud as the whisper.
a mindful state of the heart.

  7. I loved the second stanza, especially the piano scales line. I also got the image of a young girl, but under the weight of an adult's expectations, not free to be who she is.
